Detailed Water & Ice Rescue Frisbuoy Throwing Instructions

Please Note that the Water & Ice Rescue Frisbuoy is shipped wound for a right-handed person to throw. For left handers the line should be rewound on the disc in the opposite direction.

1. Pull the blue tab on the Velcro strap that holds the line in place

2. Unwind 15 to 20 feet(about six or seven loops) of line and let it drop to the ground in front of you and away from your feet and debris

3. Firmly grasp the rope with your non throwing hand.

4. Place your throwing thumb in the thumb indent

5. Stand sideways with your right shoulder pointing towards the victim.  (Left shoulder for left handed throwers)

6. When you throw, pull the disc in a straight line across your chest with your arm pointing at the victim at the end of the throw

7. Keep the disc horizontal (parallel to the water surface or ground) as you release it

8. When you release the disc at the end of the throw, your wrist will snap the disc, as in throwing a Frisbee, and cause it to rotate shedding the line.

Since this is a conscious victim rescue device, please tell the victim that you will be throwing a Rescue Frisbuoy past them and that they can then grasp the floating yellow rope or pull the orange disc to them. Also tell them to hold it firmly as you pull them to safety.

In any rescue situation you should also be aware of wind speed and direction and any water currents that may affect the victim as well as the disc when it lands near the victim.

You should always aim for a point 5 to 10 feet past the victim and slightly upwind of the victim. The disc with the victim should be retrieved with a smooth steady pull. Very rapid and jerking motion on the line may cause the victim to loose their grip.

All persons who may reasonably be expected to use the disc should practice a minimum of five throws and 5 re-throws. It is very important to become adept at the entire process as seconds and accuracy are always of prime importance in a rescue situation. The fact that you may be very good with a Frisbee is very beneficial but does not guarantee proficiency with the Water & Ice Rescue Frisbuoy.

Distance and Direction Tips

If the disc curves left, you had it tipped down when you released it

If the disc curves right you had it tipped up when you released it

Maximum distance will be achieved with a throwing angle of 15 to 25 degrees above a line parallel with the surface of the water. Steeper angles will result in shorter throws.

Re-Throw Tips

Should your first throw miss the victim, you can quickly retrieve the disc coiling the line in 4 to 6 foot coils in front of you as you retrieve the disc. After you have reacquired the disc stand with the coils of line in front of you and re-throw the disc. The disc will not travel as far with this method but it is much quicker. Even if you are an expert thrower you should practice re-throws in this manner, as some rescue situations may involve multiple victims and thus will demand a re-throw.
